The Clemson Tigers defense in 2024 will rank top-five in all of college football, when the season concludes. Here’s why.
In the Dabo Swinney era, one thing has remained constant year after year: the Tigers have one of the most dominant defenses in the country. That will remain the same this year, but don’t be surprised if the Tigers finish the season with the best defensive statistics in the nation.
Each year, Clemson finds a way to reload the talent they lost to the NFL draft through their immaculate high school recruiting tactics. During the 2023 recruiting cycle, the Tigers brought in defensive end T.J. Parker and defensive tackle Peter Woods, two players who proved their value quickly and displayed star potential.
It appears that the Tigers were able to do the same in the 2024 recruiting cycle with the signing of five-star linebacker Sammy Brown, who looks to make another immediate impact.
According to ESPN, the Tigers defense is ranked No. 4 in the country heading into the 2024 season, and it is easy to see why.
The Tigers are returning eight of their 11 primary starters on defense heading into the season.
In 2023, the Tigers displayed how dominant they are on defense, allowing just 288.2 yards per game, which ranked eighth in the country. The defense also allowed only 173.6 passing yards per game in 2023, which also ranked eighth.
The Tigers will look to slightly improve on their rushing yards allowed per game in 2024, where they allowed 114.6 yards per game in 2023, although this still ranked 24th in the country.
College football games are won in the trenches, and the Tigers look to bully offensive lines all season long with constant pressure on opposing teams’ quarterbacks. Heading into the 2024 season, the Tigers defensive line is ranked ninth in the country, according to PFF.
With their impressive statistics from 2023 and a full offseason for the defense to improve and increase chemistry between players, the defense looks fully prepared for an impressive season in 2024.
Clemson only allowed over 30 points to an opponent once during the regular season in 2023. With a revamped and much-improved offense heading into 2024, the Tigers have all the pieces they need to make a run at the ACC Championship and a playoff spot this season.
The Tigers defense will face their toughest test of the season when they battle Georgia’s offense in the first game of the season on Aug. 31.
