The Clemson Tigers are ready to dominate their opposition in 2024, and the key to their success will be their offensive line. Here’s why.
Clemson is well known for its dominant offensive line in the Dabo Swinney era. However, in 2023, the Tigers struggled up front.
Last season, two glaring statistics highlight the Tigers’ issues: they averaged 4.2 yards per carry, ranking 65th in the country, and had a sack rate of 5.9%, ranking 61st in the country.
The Tigers hired Matt Luke in the offseason to be their new offensive line coach. Luke is one of the top position coaches in college football, with over 20 years of coaching experience at the college level, most notably at Ole Miss.
Luke is also an excellent recruiter, and you can expect the Tigers to bring in top talent each year with him at the helm of the offensive line.
He will demand a lot from his line in 2024, and everything is set up for the Tigers’ offensive line to have a bounce-back season.
Luke told reporters just two weeks ago that his entire offensive line is healthy heading into fall camp, which begins Thursday, Aug. 1. He also believes there are about eight players he feels comfortable with playing each week.
That is great news for Tigers fans. Even if the offensive line suffers injuries or other setbacks, there is plenty of depth behind the five starters.
Additionally, this Clemson offensive line is returning four of five starters from the 2023 season, with their only loss coming at the center position, where they will be without Will Putnam.
With the revamped, healthy, and talent-rich offensive line that Luke has assembled, this unit will be key to the team’s success in 2024.
This talented offensive line will open up the run game for running back Phil Mafah, who looks to have a dominant season after an impressive 2023 campaign.
Additionally, if the offensive line can give quarterback Cade Klubnik the protection he needs, it will open up the passing game for the Tigers and give Klubnik confidence, knowing he has time to make the right reads down the field.
The running and passing game heavily rely on the Tigers’ offensive line, and they will be the key to success for Clemson this upcoming season.
