CLEMSON- While much of the attention this spring has been focused on improvements on the offensive side of the ball, Clemson defensive coordinator Wes Goodwin was also looking to shore up some things on the defensive side of the ball.
Coming into the spring Goodwin said one of the goals has been shoring up the red zone defense and eliminating some of the big plays.
"I feel like we've hammered a lot of our problem areas," Goodwin said. "I know red zone, if you look at totality-wise, we obviously finished down in the red zone [statistics]. A lot of factors go into that, so just really harping on situational awareness, situational football. Defensive football comes down to, obviously, limiting points, but turnovers, last year we did a good job, led the nation with 28 turnovers and five defensive scores. And next, I would say limiting explosive plays."
With spring practicing winding down and the spring game set for Saturday, Goodwin has been more than pleased with what he's seeen
"I mean, you're never where you want to be, but I feel like we're in a really good spot," he said. I'm confident that we can put together a good product this year and be really good defensively.
While he readily admits there is still work to be done, Goodwin loves the chemistry he has seen at all three levels.
"Really happy with where we're at from a front-seven standpoint and back-seven standpoint," Goodwin said. I feel like there's great chemistry in the run game, fitting the runs, guys know where their help is. And in the passing game as well, it's been really good. A lot to iron out before Game 1, but that's what spring practice and the summer is for.
