DeMonte Capehart was one of the top defensive tackles in 2020 recruiting class.
However, after three seasons at Clemson, the former 4-star recruit has yet to really show what he is capable of on the field. Injuries, as well as a crowded depth chart, have limited Capehart’s opportunities and that is something he is looking to change in 2023.
“I’m ready to show up everyday, show what I can do, prove myself,” Capehart said. “Like coach says, you’ve got to be ready to work hard. Don’t expect no seat. You’ve got to come and show up every day.”
With Tyler Davis and Ruke Orhorhoro both deciding to return for another season and the Tigers bringing in one of the best group of defensive tackles in the 2023 recruiting class, it would have been understandable for Capehart to have considered transferring to another school in an effort to seek more playing time.
“I’m pretty sure everybody’s thought about a situation like that,” he said. “But you’ve just got to show up to work every day ready to go, take the opportunity that you get and take advantage of it.”
In fact, Capehart sees all that quality depth as motivation, and he insists he will be ready whenever his number is called.
“It’s great to have those guys, because we can back each other up,” Capehart said. “To learn from others, as good as they are, and just be ready to ball.”
Capehart saw his most extensive action a season ago, but still logged just 83 snaps. In those limited opportunities, he often flashed his potential and was credited with two tackles for loss.
With Orhorhoro being held out this spring while he recovers from an injury sustained last season, Capehart is looking forward to getting more reps, and he plans to take advantage of each and every one of them.
“That’s easy to show up and do because everybody here is good,” Capehart said. “You’ve just got to be ready to perform. You’re either going to be ready to perform or the opportunity is going to pass you by.”
