Billy Amick's RBI single in the seventh gave Clemson a 16-6 walk-off victory as the Tigers picked up a run rule win over No. 17 Coastal Carolina on Tuesday at Doug Kingsmore Stadium.
Both teams agreed to a ten-run rule prior to the game.
Clemson pounded out 15 hits and Caden Grice drove in four runs as the Tigers move to 17-13 on the season. The win snaps the Tigers' three-game losing streak, while the Chanticleers drop to 18-8.
Clemson got to Coastal Carolina starter Levi Huesman early and often, tagging him for five earned runs in just two innings of work, as he dropped to 1-3 on the season.
After Coastal plated a run in the top of the first, Clemson came right back in the bottom half, getting RBI hits from Will Taylor and Caden Grice to take a 3-1 lead.
The Chanticleers cut the lead to one on a solo home run by Chad Born in the second, but the Tigers came right back in the bottom half of the inning, getting solo shots of their own from Billy Amick and Cooper Ingle to extend the lead to 5-2.
After a scoreless third, Coastal plated another run in the fourth on a fielders choice by Born to pull the Chants to within 5-3. Clemson would push the lead right back to three in the bottom half of the inning when Grice drove in two with a big two-out double.
Coastal was right back at it in the fifth getting RBI hits from Derek Bender and Graham Brown, cutting the Tigers' lead to just a run. Clemson responded in the bottom half of the inning as freshman Cam Cannarella poked a base hit out to left, driving in two, and Grice drove in two more on a two out double with the bases loaded to make it 10-5.
After Coastal added a run in the sixth, Clemson once again loaded the bases in the bottom half of the inning. This time with nobody out. A sacrifice fly by Riley Bertram, a wild pitch by former Clemson pitcher Alex Edmondson and an RBI by Cannarella made it 13-6.
Edmondson would then walk the bases loaded in the bottom of the seventh and Bertram would make the Chants pay, driving in two on a double to the gap in left-center, breaking the game open and pushing the lead to 15-6. Amick would then add the RBI single to end it.
Freshman Ethan Darden got the start for Clemson, allowing a run on two hits in three innings of work. Nick Hoffman got the win (3-1) after allowing two runs in two innings in middle relief.
Player of the Game: Grice's four RBI led the way for the Tigers. He was 2-for-3 on the night and also scored a run. Grice now has 23 runs driven in this season.
Stat of the Game: Every Clemson hitter in the starting lineup had at least one hit. Five of those had multiple base hits.
Up Next: The Tigers go back out on the road this weekend, as Clemson heads to Tallahassee for a three-game series against Florida State. The series gets started on Thursday, with first pitch set for 8 p.m. The game will be televised on the ACC Network.
