Clemson Tigers vs. App State 2024: First-Half Analysis (Football)

It's halftime of Clemson's home opener against Appalachian State, and here are the takeaways from the dominant first-half performance by the Tigers as they look for their first win of the season.

Clemson fans were eager to see true freshman wide receiver Bryant Wesco Jr. get involved early this season, and he made quite the impression on the opening drive with a 75-yard touchdown catch, giving the Tigers an early 7-0 lead.

The Tigers' defense also started strong, putting consistent pressure on Appalachian State quarterback Joey Aguilar, which led to a punt on their first drive.

Clemson made it a priority to get Wesco the ball early, and he hauled in another pass on the second drive, this time for 52 yards, setting up a walk-in touchdown that extended the Tigers' lead to 14-0.

Following their dominant passing attack on the first two drives, running back Phil Mafah broke loose for an 83-yard touchdown run.

On Clemson’s fourth drive, tight end Jake Briningstool caught a 41-yard touchdown pass down the sideline from quarterback Cade Klubnik, pushing the lead to 28-0.

Klubnik continued his strong start with another passing touchdown, a 29-yard strike to Antonio Williams.

Klubnik then ran in a three-yard touchdown, giving the Tigers a commanding 42-0 lead with more than 12 minutes remaining in the first half.

Clemson’s offense remained unstoppable in the second quarter, with freshman T.J. Moore scoring his first career touchdown on a 33-yard pass from Klubnik.

The Tigers capped off their first-half scoring with Briningstool's second touchdown reception of the game.

The Clemson defense dominated Appalachian State’s offense throughout the half, forcing four punts in the first quarter. However, they did allow a touchdown early in the second quarter. They bounced back quickly, holding Appalachian State to just two field goals for the rest of the half.

Clemson finished the first half with 525 total yards, including 147 rushing yards and 378 passing yards.

In the second half, expect the Tigers' young players and backups to get the majority of playing time.
