Clemson quarterback Cade Klubnik, part of the highly-touted 2022 recruiting class, has seen his ranking fall amid disappointing performance metrics. ESPN’s David Hale highlighted the struggles of the 2022 class, which had 31 quarterbacks rated as four- or five-star recruits. Collectively, these quarterbacks have logged just 68 starts, a 53.8 Total QBR, 58.5% completions, and 6.5 yards per pass. Only 14 have started a game, 12 have thrown more than 50 college passes, and eight have yet to attempt a pass, with 10 already transferring.
Klubnik's performance statistics underline these challenges. ESPN reported that Klubnik had the second-lowest percentage of throws covering at least 20 air yards (8.2%) and targeted running backs and tight ends more than any other Power 5 quarterback, with 164 attempts. Consequently, Klubnik was placed in Tier 7 among his fellow 2022 recruits.
Comparatively, Clemson quarterbacks have seen a dramatic decline in performance. From 2015 through 2020, Clemson QBs posted an 82.4 Total QBR against FBS opponents, ranking third nationally and first in the ACC. However, from 2021 through 2023, their Total QBR plummeted to 54.8, placing them 78th in FBS and worst in the ACC.
The drop in performance and rankings reflects broader issues within Clemson's quarterback development and execution, with Klubnik’s struggles emblematic of the challenges facing the 2022 quarterback class.
