Clemson’s New OC Pleased with Klubnik

CLEMSON — New Clemson offensive coordinator Garrett Riley likes what he has seen and heard about the progression of quarterback Cade Klubnik.

With the Tigers just a few weeks away from the start of fall camp, Riley feels Klubnik and the offense, as a whole, has taken the next step in their progression.

“It is cool to see at this point and time how the buy-in has taken another step with our guys and some of that confidence within him of running this,” Riley said Tuesday from the Allen Reeves Football Complex.

Dabo Swinney and the Clemson Football Program hosted their annual Media Outing, and Riley is pleased with the direction his young quarterback and the offense is headed.

“Things are becoming muscle memory. They are not having to think as much,” he said. “This is kind of a fun time to really see how they have accelerated mentally probably more than anything compared to when they first learned this.

“(Klubnik) has been doing a great job. We have good leadership really on the whole team, but offensively, I think, we have kind of a cast of leaders who have done a great job this summer.”

Klubnik is expected to be Clemson’s starting quarterback when the Tigers open the season on Labor Day night at Duke. The sophomore came in for a struggling DJ Uiagalelei in the ACC Championship Game and guided the Tigers to a win over North Carolina while earning MVP honors. He then earned his first career start in the Orange Bowl against Tennessee.

Riley was hired by Swinney to take over the Clemson offense last January.
