Clemson's Revamped Offensive Line Under Matt Luke: Key to Success in 2024 (Football)

Clemson offensive line coach Matt Luke, right, communicates with offensive lineman Chapman Pendergrass (65) before the TaxSlayer Gator Bowl at EverBank Stadium in Jacksonville, Florida, Friday, December 29, 2023.

The key to a successful offense is a dominant offensive line. With a new offensive line coach in Matt Luke, here is how the Clemson Tigers revamped offensive line will propel this Clemson offense to a successful season.

Clemson’s offensive line struggled last year after losing starting right guard Walter Parks to a season-ending injury early in the season. However, in December, Clemson hired notable offensive line coach Matt Luke. This is a massive hire for Clemson as they look to provide Cade Klubnik with better protection and open up the running game and passing game.

Matt Luke has coached college football for more than 20 years. Most notably, he was Ole Miss’s offensive line coach from 2012 to 2019, and he was elevated to interim head coach in the 2017 season when Hugh Freeze was fired. During his tenure at Ole Miss, his offensive line propelled their offense and set program records for scoring, touchdowns, total offense, passing yards, and passing touchdowns.

After losing center Will Putman in the offseason, Clemson will be returning four of five starters from last season. With the key addition of Elyjah Thurmon, who is ranked as the 34th-best offensive line recruit in the country and a four-star prospect according to 247Sports, the Tigers will have an experienced offensive line and quality depth in 2024.

Matt Luke will be looking for similar success to what he had during his tenure at Ole Miss and give some relief to the Tigers defense in 2024.

With Cade Klubnik having a full year of experience under his belt entering the 2024 season, the revamped offensive line will help him elevate his numbers from last season, where he struggled at times.

By giving Cade more time to pass the ball with less pressure crashing down on him, he will be looking for much-improved numbers in the passing game, particularly in his completion percentage, which was 63.9% in 2023, ranking just 46th in the country.

With the revamped offensive line providing Cade with the protection he needs, the run game will also open up for the Tigers. If the passing game becomes a threat, the run game will open up as well, as teams will have to be wary of the threat through the air and on the ground.

Clemson averaged less than four and a half yards per carry in 2023, ranking 65th in the country. Increasing that number will be one of Matt Luke's top priorities this offseason, as a successful run game is key to championship teams.

If Clemson is going to have an offense that threatens opponents in 2024, it all begins with the offensive line. With the hire of Matt Luke as their offensive line coach, he brings the pedigree needed to revamp this Clemson offense as they search for new success when the season begins.
