Dabo Swinney Addresses How Involved He Will Be In Clemson’s New Offense

When Clemson opens spring practice next month, the Tigers will be implementing a new scheme on the offensive side of the ball.

After helping guide TCU to the national title game behind a high-powered offense that ranked 27th in the nation in total offense (455 YPG) and ninth in scoring offense (38.8 PPG), new offensive coordinator Garrett Riley will now be tasked with helping improve a Clemson passing game that has lacked explosiveness the past two seasons. The Tigers averaged just 232.4 yards per game through the air in 2022, ranking just No. 66 in the country.

“We got to get better passing the ball period, you know, we got to be better,” head coach Dabo Swinney said on Wednesday. “We’ve got a really great foundation from a run standpoint, but we got to we got to get better throwing and catching and I think he’s gonna really help us there.”

With a new system being installed and a new coach running things on that side of the ball, some have questioned how much Swinney himself will be involved in running the Tigers’ new offense.

“It won’t be any different than it’s been for 14 years,” Swinney said. “I’ve been involved for 14 years and not just offense. Defense, special teams, recruiting, staffing, there’s not one area that I’m not involved in.”

However, how exactly involved Swinney will be remains to be seen. For now, the focus is on preparing for the spring and the head coach said he is not only excited about what he can learn from Riley, but also about being able to help when needed.

“Excited about a change,” Swinney said. “This is my sixth offensive coordinator since I’ve been the head coach, and I look forward to, again, continuing to learn and continue to get better and definitely add value where I can add value, and help where I know I can help.”
