Dabo Swinney, Clemson Put in Final Prep for FAU Challenge

Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney addressed the media on Wednesday for the final time before the Tigers take on Florida Atlantic on Saturday at 8 p.m., and he believes the Owls will present a challenge on both sides of the ball:

On FAU offense: “Schematically they’re going to be a challenge. They really test you with their eyes and they do a lot of different motions. They got speed and some guys that can really run.”

On FAU defense: “Big, strong active guys inside. They’re well-coached. Lot of movement so you’ve got to be able to communicate. Lot of things that will challenge us this week.”

Here’s what else Swinney had to say Wednesday, including notes on several young freshmen through two games:

  • Swinney said the offense, which has turned the ball over five times in two games, has done a lot of drill work to hold onto the football, and the coaches have tried to strain them in practice, same as every week. “Practice has gone well.”
  • With Andrew Mukuba out with a lower-body injury, freshmen Khalil Barnes and Avion Terrell have been working in the nickel package. “Two really good players with bright futures. Barnes did a good job for us last week. Really proud of him. They’ve gotten a ton of reps in practice.”
  • Wade Woodaz has great instincts for the game, understands the game at a high level: “He plays really, really hard. Great effort guy. He loves practice and it shows.”
  • On punter Aidan Swanson’s start to the season and holding onto the job he held last year: “He’s had two really good games. Been a bright spot. He was really consistent through camp. Jack (Smith) is right there. Aidan has been steady.”
  • On Tyler Brown: “Keep growing, keep blossoming. It’s really nice not to have drop-off (between Brown and Antonio Williams). He’s played some pretty good football, played with no fear.”
