Lake Tahoe, NV—Former Clemson quarterback Trevor Lawrence competed in the 35th annual American Century Championship golf tournament at Edgewood Golf Club in Lake Tahoe, Nevada over the weekend. Lawrence was the first former Clemson athlete to play in the event since former Clemson baseball player Jimmy Key in 2001.
Lawrence finished in a tie for 44th place out of 90 players with Hall of Fame running back Jerome Bettis. Ironically, Key finished in 44th place in 2001, the last time a former Clemson athlete played in the event that was televised nationally by NBC.
The former Tiger signal caller, is now the starting quarterback for the Jacksonville Jaguars. He was the number-one pick of the 2021 draft. At 24-years-old, Lawrence was the youngest player in the American Century Championship.
Lawrence scored 15 points on Sunday in the Stableford scoring system used by the tournament. He had two points in the first round, -5 in the second and 15 in the final round, for a 54-hole total of 12.
His final round included three birdies and 10 pars. He made a birdie on the ninth hole, his final hole of the day when he made a 20-foot putt. He also made birdies on the 15th and 17th holes. His score on Sunday was a 76 in terms of a stroke play, four over par.
Former Tennis professional Mardy Fish won the tournament with 83 points, the second most points in the history of the tournament.
Lawrence played for the Tigers between 2018-20. As a true freshman in 2018 he quarterbacked Clemson to the National Championship. He is still the only first-year freshman to quarterback a team to the National Championship since Jamelle Holieway of Oklahoma in 1985. He was an All-American in 2019 and 2020 and finished with a 34-2 record as Clemson’s starting quarterback, the most victories in school history. He led Clemson to the College Football Playoffs three consecutive years.
