Garrett Riley Had the Approval of Clemson Quarterbacks

Anytime there is a change at a position there is always some natural worry about whether or not the people under them will follow, be excited or look to move on somewhere else. That worry is no more real than in college sports, especially in the era of the transfer portal.

That meant that Clemson Tigers’ head coach Dabo Swinney had to be extra cautious when he decided to fire former offensive coordinator, the coach who recruited and had relationships with the current group of quarterbacks–including starter Cade Klubnik and four-star true freshman Chris Vizzina, with TCU’s Garrett Riley.

But as Swinney said, he knew that Riley would be a natural.

“Really, really hasn’t surprised me at all. After my dealings with him, I knew that he was going to be a natural in connecting with our guys here and also with the recruits,” Swinney said.

Swinney also went so far as to let his quarterbacks know of the impending change–and there excitement was evident.

‘And I talked to Cade and CV before I ever made a change, kind of all happened at the same time. I didn’t want them to hear anything from anybody but me,” Swinney said. “And again, because that’s a tough change for them but they were super excited about the opportunity with Garrett. And so obviously Cade already had a little bit of a relationship there and CV knew of him.”
