The transfer portal has dominated the college football landscape in recent years. The shift has been met with a lot of turmoil and curiosity, but one thing is for sure: The transfer portal is here to stay.
According to 247Sports, "There are currently 3,843 names in the FBS transfer portal, per a source, which smashed the previous record of 3,502 set in the 2022-23 cycle."
There are countless reasons why players decide to enter the transfer portal. Some seek more playing time. Others believe they would be a better fit at a different program. Some players even think they will have better NIL opportunities elsewhere. The reasons athletes decide to enter the transfer portal are never-ending.
247Sports reported, "Most of the college football players from power conferences who enter the transfer portal are backups or reserves seeking more playing time. However, more than 200 power conference players who started in at least six games during the 2023 season still entered the transfer portal this cycle."
The transfer portal has not only changed the game for players, but it has also transformed recruiting for coaches.
Coaches often prefer recruiting through the transfer portal rather than offering scholarships to high school players.
Offering a player a scholarship is an investment for a coach. Sometimes that investment pays off, but many times it can backfire. Coaches often look to make the safer investment, and in college football, that means offering a scholarship to a player in the transfer portal rather than a high school player.
College football is a completely different game both on and off the field than high school football. Many young players struggle or fail to make the necessary adjustments when they reach college.
College football is a massive time commitment, filled with early morning runs, afternoon lifts, practices, and time watching film throughout the day. Players must handle all of that while also going to school and taking care of off-field responsibilities.
On the field, players need to gain size out of high school to compete with the grown men they face every Saturday.
In this new era of college football, coaches often choose to utilize the transfer portal over recruiting high school players. They use the portal because they know they are getting players who can navigate the everyday lifestyle of a college football player. They are getting someone who has done it before, and they have film of these young men competing in practice and games against other college players, not high schoolers.
The transfer portal has completely changed the college football landscape, and that is not changing anytime soon.
