Clemson starting DE Justin Mascoll met with the media ahead of the Tigers’ Labor Day night matchup with Duke. The senior touched on a number of subjects, including the defenses mindset and how the new Clemson offense has helped the unit prepare for the dangerous Riley Leonard.
- Mascoll said it is “exciting” opening up against a meaningful opponent on a Monday night but stressed that the team is treating it like any other game.
- Mascoll said camp has been good and said the Tigers mindset coming in is “uncommon effort.” There is more of an emphasis being placed on creating turnovers.
- Mascoll said Duke QB Riley Leonard is a good quarterback who can make plays with his feet and he thinks this will be a great game. Says Duke will try and hit them on the edges and he feels like Garrett Riley’s offense has helped prepare the defense for what they will see.
- Mascoll said he never considered transferring, noting “the grass isn’t always greener on the other side.” Said he could not imagine finishing up his career anywhere else.
- Peter Woods and T.J. Parker are two freshmen on the defense that have stood out. Also noted that A.J Hoffler and David Ojiegbe were obviously coached well in high school.
- Mascoll said he has focused on improving his pass rush moves. That he has worked hard on finding his “style” and improving on his weaknesses. Said he is more of a “speed and power” type pass rusher but at the same time feels has grown into a more versatile pass rusher. Noted he has watched a lot of NFL film to prepare for this season.
- Mascoll said the team knows they have the pieces in place to give them a chance this year and that is why there has been some talk of a national title from some players.
- Mascoll said this is a physical defense and that they play with enough toughness to set the edge successfully.
- Cade Klubnik has looked “great” and Mascoll has really liked what he has seen from the offense.
