All Clemson Tigers is getting you ready for the 2023 season with a list of some of the most anticipated players. Heading into the fall, these Tigers are either coming off of injuries, stepping into larger roles, or are needed for Clemson to have a big season. You won’t find fan favorites like Will Shipley or Barrett Carter on this list. They are known commodities. Instead, the focus is on players the fans can’t wait to see and do something they haven’t seen.
Let’s keep the countdown going with No. 8.
Junior safety Andrew Mukuba
Key stats from 2022: 53 total tackles, one interception, three pass breakups in 12 games.
Why the hype?: Mukuba didn’t quite build off of his stellar freshman season with a promising sophomore campaign. An arm injury that kept him playing in a sling last year limited his mobility, and he had to play a great deal of cornerback because of injuries and inconsistencies in the secondary. But it was evident in the spring that Mukuba is playing with something to prove entering his third (and money) year with the Tigers. He had his swagger back and looks ready to fulfill his potential this fall.
What to expect in 2023: A healthier Mukuba is a scarier Mukuba. It also helps that he’s slated to play safety, not nickel corner, this season. That means he can be a rangy ballhawk, which fits his skillset better. It’s a crowded safety room, but this junior will land on some preseason All-ACC teams, and if he stays on the field, he could go from one of the team’s top five tacklers in 2022 to a top two or three in 2023. Throw in a few interceptions now that he’s reading and reacting instead of searching for the ball/defender, and Mukuba could power his way into the NFL after this season.
