The Pittsburgh Steelers have officially signed former Clemson standout Tanner Muse to a one-year deal, the team announced Monday.

Muse comes to Pittsburgh from Seattle, where he was a core special teams player for the Seahawks the last two seasons. The NFL linebacker became a free agent in March when the Seahawks declined to tender him a contract as a restricted free agent.

The former Clemson safety was a third-round pick of the Las Vegas Raiders in 2020, but he never played a defensive snap for that organization, thanks in large part to a foot injury during his rookie season that required surgery and ended his season.

The Raiders cut Muse in training camp prior to the 2021 season. He later caught on with the Seahawks’ practice squad and then converted to linebacker, where he was promoted to the active roster. He appeared in six games in 2021.

Muse played all 17 games last season and participated in 70-percent of the team’s special teams snaps and 80 percent on defense.

Signing Muse is part of the Steelers’ plan to replenish its coverage teams that have already lost some players to free agency and have several others unsigned.

At Clemson, Muse earned All-American and All-ACC status, while helping the Tigers win two national championships. He finished his college career with 237 career tackles, 10.5 behind the line of scrimmage, with four sacks, 15 passes broken up and seven interceptions. He also forced a fumble and had a 63-yard fumble return for a touchdown.

Muse played in 59 games during his career at Clemson, including 39 starts.

Quote of the week

“People ask me what I do in the winter when there’s no baseball. I’ll tell you what I do. I stare out the window and wait for spring.”
