Ranking Clemson's Top Five Quarterbacks: Legends of the Tigers Revealed (Football)

As the 2024 season draws closer, let's take a look at the great lineage of Clemson quarterbacks and rank the top five to ever wear the Tigers uniform.

5. Steve Fuller (1976-1978)

Coming in at No. 5 is Steve Fuller. Fuller earned consecutive ACC Player of the Year awards in both 1977 and 1978. He led Clemson to a 19-4-1 record in his final two seasons as the quarterback for the Tigers. He was the second player ever to have his number retired by Clemson.

4. Homer Jordan (1980-1982)

As the quarterback responsible for bringing the Tigers their first-ever National Championship victory, it would be impossible to leave Homer Jordan off this list. In 1981, Jordan led the Tigers from unranked at the start of the year to a 12-0 record and a National Championship in their final game of the season.

3. Tajh Boyd (2011-2013)

The quarterback who led Clemson back to being a dominant football program, Tajh Boyd was amazing to watch for any Clemson fan. He should be credited for bringing Clemson to where they are now, and his accolades explain why. He led the Tigers to their first ACC Championship victory in 20 years and their first-ever BCS bowl victory. He holds the Clemson records for both total passing yards (11,904) and passing touchdowns (107).

2. Trevor Lawrence (2018-2020)

The argument could easily be made that Trevor Lawrence should claim the top spot in the rankings; however, we have him coming in just behind the top spot. Lawrence had a spectacular career for the Tigers. Most notably, as a true freshman, he led Clemson to a perfect 15-0 season capped off by a National Championship victory. As a sophomore, Lawrence nearly pulled off the same magic, finishing with a record of 14-1. He concluded his career with 10,098 passing yards and 90 passing touchdowns, tying Deshaun Watson in career passing touchdowns. Additionally, Lawrence finished with 943 rushing yards and 18 rushing touchdowns. Lawrence is currently the starting quarterback for the Jacksonville Jaguars heading into the 2024 NFL season.

1. Deshaun Watson (2014-2016)

At No. 1 in the rankings, some might believe Deshaun Watson should come in behind Trevor Lawrence. However, what Watson did for the Tigers was truly remarkable. In his three seasons as Clemson's starting quarterback, Watson led the Tigers to their second National Championship in program history and shattered the record books in the process. He finished his outstanding career with 10,163 passing yards and 90 passing touchdowns, putting him second all-time in both categories. He also tallied 25 rushing touchdowns, totaling 115 touchdowns and over 11,000 yards of total offense. To add to his achievements, he was a two-time winner of the ACC Championship MVP and a Heisman Trophy finalist. Watson is currently the Cleveland Browns starting quarterback heading into the 2024 NFL season.
