The Clemson Tigers have the talent, depth, and coaching to win the ACC in 2024 and secure a spot in the College Football Playoff. Here’s how they will achieve it.
The Tigers faced a lot of criticism this offseason from the national media. Paul Finebaum believes Dabo Swinney is on his way out as Clemson’s head coach due to his decision not to embrace the transfer portal frenzy like the rest of the country.
However, Swinney has established himself as one of the top coaches of all time in college football with a record of 170-43, two national championships against Nick Saban's Alabama teams, and eight ACC championships.
His resume speaks for itself, and the young high school talent he recruits each year demonstrates the respect and pedigree of the Clemson program.
The 2024 Clemson team is the most talented on both sides of the ball since the Tigers won their last national championship in 2018.
On defense, the Tigers consistently rank in the top 10 nationally. Heading into the 2024 season, Clemson's defense is ranked ninth in the country, according to Pro Football Focus (PFF).
In recent seasons, questions have surrounded Clemson's offense. However, the 2024 offense is loaded with talent, depth behind the starters, and excellent young players ready to contribute immediately.
It starts with the offensive line. After struggling in 2023, the Tigers hired Matt Luke as their new offensive line coach before their bowl game.
The offensive line has been completely revamped under Luke, who has more than 20 years of experience coaching top offensive lines, most notably at Ole Miss and Georgia.
Luke believes there are eight players on his line who could start, with several capable of playing multiple positions.
They will be protecting quarterback Cade Klubnik, who looks to have a breakout year in 2024.
With a full year of starting experience and an offseason to develop his game, expect Cade to make a significant leap this season.
He will need help from his receiving corps, which struggled with injuries and finding a breakout star last season.
However, Tyler Brown, Adam Randall, and Antonio Williams are all healthy heading into the season, each possessing the ability and tools necessary for a breakout year.
The Tigers also brought in two top receivers from the 2024 recruiting cycle, T.J. Moore and Bryant Wesco Jr.
Wide receivers coach Tyler Grisham believes Wesco can contribute immediately following a smooth transition from high school to college in the spring. He also noted that Moore has spent more time studying film than anyone else in the receiver room since his arrival.
Finally, running back Phil Mafah looks ready for a dominant season and could be one of the top running backs in the country. In 2023, Mafah had the best season of his career, totaling 179 rushing attempts, 965 rushing yards, and 13 rushing touchdowns in 13 games (five starts).
