As Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney prepares for the upcoming season, whispers from within the college football community suggest 2024 could be a defining year for both him and his storied program.
"2024 could be a turning point for this program under Dabo [Swinney]," an anonymous coach told Athlon Sports. "The writing is on the wall — you can’t ignore the transfer market, and you have to play ball with NIL. How will he respond to that?"
Swinney, who has led Clemson to multiple national championships, now faces the challenge of adapting to a rapidly changing landscape where the transfer portal and Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL) deals are reshaping college football. The addition of offensive line coach Matt Luke is seen as a strategic move in this new era.
"Hiring [offensive line coach] Matt Luke was a really sharp move," another anonymous coach said via Athlon. "There’s this idea out there that Dabo won’t listen to outsiders, and Matt’s a guy who can bridge the gap. He’s worked in the SEC forever, he knows how to recruit at the highest level and he knows how to manage the politics and dynamics. He could really help."
Additionally, the development of quarterback Cade Klubnik has been a bright spot for the Tigers. After showing significant improvement during the 2023 season, expectations are high for the young signal-caller.
"[QB Cade] Klubnik is the real deal; when you watch his ‘23 tape, he turns a corner as the season goes," another coach noted anonymously. "He’s starting to get it, and he could break out as a true superstar this season."
