Clemson Tigers Fall 34-3 to Georgia Bulldogs: Key Takeaways from a Tough 2024 Season Opener (Football)

The No. 14 Clemson Tigers kicked off their 2024 season today against the No. 1 Georgia Bulldogs. Georgia came away with a 34-3 victory over Clemson, making a strong opening statement. Here’s a look at the ups and downs of the game for Clemson.

Clemson's defense showed flashes of its potential to be one of the top units in the country. In the first half, the Tigers allowed just six points on two field goals and limited Georgia's offense to just over 160 yards.

It was expected that Georgia’s offense might start slow; quarterback Carson Beck lost his top two targets to the NFL, including tight end Brock Bowers and wide receiver Ladd McConkey. The concern going into the game was how Georgia would adjust at halftime.

Georgia found its rhythm as the second half kicked off.

The Bulldogs scored back-to-back touchdowns to open the second half, with Carson Beck passing against Clemson’s defense with ease.

Georgia ended up dismantling the Tigers’ defense, scoring 28 points in the second half.

The Clemson Tigers' offense, in contrast, was frustrating for fans to watch in their season opener.

The offense finished the first half with just over 70 yards and crossed midfield into Georgia territory only once. They also failed to score any points in the first two quarters.

Additionally, the Tigers struggled to get anything going in the run game. Georgia’s defensive line completely dominated up front, overpowering Clemson’s offensive line.

Clemson's offensive line didn’t open up the run game for Phil Mafah, nor did it provide Cade Klubnik with enough time to make the proper reads down the field.

It was clear that Georgia’s top priority heading into the game was to shut down Clemson's run game, and they succeeded.

Clemson finished the game with just 46 yards rushing.

Furthermore, Clemson's play-calling lacked the necessary aggression, and at times, it seemed like there was no desire to push the ball downfield through the air.

However, there was one bright spot in the passing game: wide receiver Antonio Williams looked dominant and a real threat, with 76 yards receiving.

Clemson will look to bounce back next week when they take on Appalachian State at home.
