Clemson Tigers vs. App State Mountaineers 2024: Behind Enemy Lines (Football)

This weekend, the No. 25 Clemson Tigers will host the Appalachian State Mountaineers in their first home game of the season. Coming off a tough loss to the Georgia Bulldogs, Clemson will be looking to make a statement against an App State team known for pulling off upsets.

App State joined the FBS in 2014 and has thrived in the Sun Belt Conference. However, while still in the FCS, they pulled off one of the greatest upsets in college football history by beating No. 5 Michigan in Ann Arbor.

In 2022, App State struck again, defeating No. 6 Texas A&M 17-14 on a game-winning field goal.

This Saturday, Sept. 7, App State will look to pull off another upset against a Clemson team still searching for its offensive identity.

App State began its season last weekend by hosting FCS opponent East Tennessee State University. It was a dominant start as the Mountaineers secured a 38-10 victory.

Led by quarterback Joey Aguilar, App State boasts a dangerous offense that leans heavily on the passing game. Last week, Aguilar completed 22 of 37 passes for 326 yards and two touchdowns.

App State's offense put up 500 total yards against ETSU, with 326 through the air and 174 on the ground. Last season, the Mountaineers averaged 33.2 points and 445.9 yards per game.

However, defense is where App State struggles, giving Clemson an opportunity to exploit. Their opponents in 2023 averaged 27 points and 179 rushing yards per game.

Clemson struggled to establish the run against Georgia, finishing with fewer than 50 rushing yards. But against an App State team that has trouble stopping the run, this could be a prime opportunity for the Tigers’ offensive line and Phil Mafah to get off to a strong start.

Clemson and App State have faced off four times, with Clemson winning each meeting. Their last matchup was in 2015, where the Tigers won decisively, 41-10.

Clemson fans will hope for a similar result this weekend, but App State knows a thing or two about upsets and will be aiming to hand the Tigers an 0-2 start to the 2024 season.

In what promises to be an exciting matchup, Clemson will aim to bounce back from last week's defeat, while App State looks to continue its upset tradition. With Clemson seeking to establish its offense and App State relying on a potent passing attack, this game could set the tone for both teams' seasons. Fans should expect a competitive showdown in Death Valley.
