The Clemson Tigers secured their first victory of the 2024 season with a dominant win over the Appalachian State Mountaineers. Here are the highs and lows from the game.
Clemson’s offense controlled the entire first half, scoring a touchdown on every drive.
It was one of the best halves in Clemson history, with the team racking up 525 total yards in the first half, including 147 rushing yards and 378 passing yards.
Quarterback Cade Klubnik put on a remarkable display, accounting for five passing touchdowns and two rushing touchdowns. It was one of the best single-half performances by a college quarterback of all-time.
In the receiving game, nearly everyone contributed, but true freshman Bryant Wesco Jr. stood out with three catches for 130 yards and the first touchdown of his career.
Tight end Jake Briningstool also had two touchdown catches and 41 receiving yards.
Additionally, true freshman T.J. Moore had three catches for 44 yards, including the first touchdown of his Clemson career.
Klubnik spread the ball around, connecting with nine different receivers in the first half.
In the running game, Phil Mafah broke free for an 83-yard touchdown run, his first of the season, and finished the half with 118 yards.
Clemson pulled its starting offense after the first half, holding a 56-13 lead.
Appalachian State averaged more than 450 yards per game in 2023, but Clemson’s defense held them scoreless in the first quarter and limited them to one touchdown and two field goals in the first half.
The Tigers' defense also recorded two interceptions, with Ricardo Jones snagging an interception in the fourth quarter as well as Levi Matthews.
Clemson finished with 711 total yards of offense: 460 passing and 251 rushing.
Klubnik delivered the best performance of his career and will look to build on it throughout the season.
With a bye week coming up and momentum from a commanding 66-20 win, Tiger fans have plenty of reasons for optimism.
Clemson will return to action at home on Sept. 21 to face rival NC State.
