Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney met with the media Thursday for the first time since the Tigers were selected to play in the Taxslayer Gator Bowl (Dec. 29, 12 pm).
Here is what he had to say:
- "Congratulations to Coach Stoops and Kentucky for another great season. He's done an amazing job. For us, we're excited. I think we've been to the Gator Bowl more times than any other bowl."
- "I'm really proud of my team and how hard they've worked. From where we were to be able to get to the Gator Bowl is a tremendous accomplishment."
- He said he honestly wasn't considering a staff change at offensive line coach (moving on from Thomas Austin) until last Wednesday. Reached out to new OL coach Matt Luke (formerly of UGA) around then once he decided on the change.
- Confirms defenders Jeremiah Trotter Jr., Nate Wiggins, and Ruke Orhorhoro will not play in the Gator Bowl. "Other than that, I think all hands are on deck."
- "Trott, Wiggins, and Ruke all declared so they will not be playing in the bowl game and obviously we got some guys in the portal but we are excited to come to the Gator Bowl and play"
- Swinney: "I might have to play corner in this game." Mark Stoops: "You can do it. I've seen the way you run out there on the field."
- "We've won four games in a row, and we've won the turnover margin. The biggest thing for us, we're not perfect, but we've been able to win that margin."
- On transfer portal: "Nothing’s different than it’s ever been. We evaluate the portal and if we feel like there’s a need we’ll try to fill that need. … Nothing’s changed with the exception of we have 1 position in particular we’d like to find a couple guys with multiple years of eligibility.”
- "We have always evaluated the portal we offered a few guys last year and we have brought some older guys in for experience in the QB room but the guys we offered we just did not get them"
