CLEMSON, S.C. — No. 25 Clemson put on an offensive clinic Saturday in a 66-20 victory over Appalachian State, showcasing a precision attack led by quarterback Cade Klubnik.
Klubnik, who played only in the first half, was nearly flawless, completing 24 of 26 passes for 378 yards and including seven touchdowns.
"We were just too much. We played with incredible precision," head coach Dabo Swinney said after the game.
Swinney praised his quarterback for his standout performance but tempered expectations moving forward. "That's what he can do," Swinney said. "I don't expect him to have seven touchdowns in a half every week, but he can spin it, make all the throws."
Clemson's receiving corps was equally impressive, especially true freshmen Bryant Wesco Jr. and T.J. Moore. Both wideouts made significant contributions to the Tigers' offensive explosion.
"They're true freshmen. They're gonna be around for a while," Swinney said.
The veteran coach also highlighted the overall performance of his wide receivers. "Our receivers played like we expected them to play... all those guys had an opportunity to make plays."
Despite the blowout win, Swinney acknowledged there would still be plenty of teaching moments, particularly on defense. However, he emphasized the positives of the game, including the chance to get many players on the field.
"All in all, a great opportunity to play a lot of guys," Swinney said. "Will be some stuff to coach off of, especially defensively. Eight straight TDs, I don't think I've ever been a part of something like that."
Swinney also took a moment to commend the home crowd for their unwavering support.
"Our fans were awesome. What an environment," he said. "Our fans are resilient too."
