This weekend, Saturday, Aug. 24, the Florida State Seminoles will face the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets in the first ACC matchup of the season. Florida State is the preseason favorite to win the ACC in 2024, but here’s why they are on upset alert and what it could mean for the rest of the conference.
Florida State was a dominant force in the ACC last season, led by head coach Mike Norvell. The Seminoles went undefeated in the regular season, won the ACC Championship, and then lost their bowl game to finish the season 13-1.
Given their success last season and their growing dominance over the past few years, it’s understandable that Florida State is favored to win the ACC this upcoming season.
Mike Norvell has demonstrated his ability to utilize the transfer portal to bring in top talent each season. The issue is that players who transfer in typically have only one or two seasons of eligibility remaining. This leads to constant turnover and a lack of development for young talent.
This issue could come back to haunt the Seminoles this season, as they lost 10 starters to the 2024 NFL Draft.
As a result, the Seminoles will be inexperienced when they take the field this weekend against Georgia Tech in Dublin, Ireland.
Florida State must replace five starters on offense, including their starting quarterback, leading running back, top two wide receivers, and starting tight end.
Additionally, the Seminoles lost two starting defensive backs and their two best defensive linemen.
While they still have a talented roster and should be a strong team in 2024, their inexperience could lead to a loss against an underrated Georgia Tech team.
Georgia Tech has the potential to field a great offense in 2024, led by quarterback Haynes King, who could develop into an elite quarterback if he can limit his turnovers from last season. The Yellow Jackets also boast one of the best running backs in the ACC, Jamal Haynes, and an elite wide receiver, Eric Singleton Jr.
A high-scoring game could result in an upset victory for Georgia Tech and a crushing loss for Florida State. The implications of such a result would be significant for the rest of the conference.
Clemson would quickly become the favorite to win the ACC and know that if they can beat Florida State on the road, the regular season conference title and a possible playoff berth would be within reach.
