Former Clemson Tiger Spencer Strider Sets Another Atlanta Braves Record (Baseball)

MLB Miami Marlins at Atlanta Braves

Former Clemson pitcher Spencer Strider added his name to record books once again in just his second season with the Atlanta Braves.

The right-handed starter struck out his ninth batter in Monday’s game against the Miami Marlins to set the Braves franchise record for nine consecutive games with 9+ strikeouts.

Strider passed former Atlanta great and Baseball Hall of Famer John Smoltz for the new mark.

In his first four starts of 2023, Strider struck out nine batters each. He reached that number in his fifth start in the sixth inning on Monday against the Marlins.

Strider finished with 13 strikeouts in eight scoreless innings. He allowed just two hits and took a no-hitter into the eighth inning. The Braves won 11-0 as Strider improved to 4-0 on the season. He has 49 strikeouts in 2023.

Strider, who played for the Tigers from 2018-20, passed Smoltz last year for the most strikeouts in a game (16). He also became the fastest player in MLB history to reach 200 strikeouts in 130 innings, passing Randy Johnson during the 2022 season.

Strider had back-to-back performances last year with 11+ strikeouts, tying a franchise record set by Smoltz and fellow Hall of Famer Warren Spahn.

The second-year Brave is closing in on 250 career strikeouts in just 38 appearances (25 starts) in the Big Leagues.

Strider was a fourth-round selection by the Braves in the 2020 MLB draft. He's now a major part of the Atlanta rotation.
