CHARLOTTE- Over the years, the Clemson and Georgia Tech rivalry has featured plenty of thrilling moments. Not so much lately, though.
When the two teams face off in November, the Tigers will come in having won eight consecutive games over the Yellow Jackets, with all but one of those wins being coming in fairly dominating fashion.
After opening the season in Atlanta last season, this year's game is back in Death Valley. The last time the two team's faced off in Clemson, Georgia Tech almost pulled off the stunning upset. The Yellow Jackets lost 14-8 in heartbreaking fashion. It took a James Skalski fourth down stop at the two yard line to preserve the win.
"Electric, their fan base is unbelievable," LaMiles Brooks told All Clemson Tigers when recalling the game. "It's always loud there. You can be making a play or give up a play and you look up and it's a sea of orange. It could be intimidating, but very electric."
The tightly contested affair also featured a lightning delay that lasted close to two hours. While the Jackets would go on to finish that season at 3-9, Brooks looks back at that close loss in Death Valley with pride, despite the disappointing ending.
"I would say the passion that we have," he said. "I think we had a two hour lightning delay and it can make it very tough on a team to keep their passion and their fight after being on a break that long during a game. To come out and fight the way we did and run it down to the last two seconds and one or two yards, it was unbelievable. Unfortunately, we didn't come away with the win but that game said a lot about that team."
Brooks feels that experience in Death Valley in 2021 can only help the Jackets when they make the return trip to Clemson late in the season and while his team will probably be a significant underdog, the junior defensive back is hopeful his team can once again go toe-to-toe with the Tigers again.
"I think it will be exciting," Brooks said. "We play later in the season and hopefully we can get a run going before we even get there. I think that would bring a boom of confidence going into Death Valley."
