Mike Reed Raves About Depth Clemson Has At Corner (Football)

Mike Reed (Jason Priester All Clemson Tigers)

CLEMSON- Mike Reed spoke very highly of his group of corners at Clemson's annual media day on Tuesday. Here are some notes from his session with the media.

  • Reed said he has more depth now than since he has been at Clemson. Overall, he thinks the Tigers have all the ingredients to be a very good team.
  • Every cornerback is cleared and ready to go for fall camp, including Jeadyn Lukus, who missed most of the spring. Reed called Lukus extremely athletic.
  • Reed wants each of his corners to prepare as if they are the starter. Noted that each player is just one play away from being called upon.
  • Athleticism, leadership and experience are some of the strengths that stand out to Reed among his group of corners.
  • Reed said he is looking for big things from sophomore Toriano Pride.
  • Sheridan Jones is once again embracing a leadership role, with Reed saying this was his "last hurrah" and he wants him to leave it all out on the field.
  • The message to the incoming freshman is he recruited them to Clemson to play.
  • Reed spoke very highly of Misun "Tink" Kelley. Noted that with Kelley being a local kid they were very familiar with him, with Reed saying "I'm glad he is rocking with me."
  • Reed talked a little about former Clemson Tiger and current 49er Ray Ray McCloud, noting that he thought he could have been as good at corner, or even better, than he was at receiver.
  • Reed noted that he is very pleased with the accountability of the group this summer.
  • Reed said this year the defense will be a better product now that Wes Goodwin has a season of experience under his belt. Said Goodwin doesn't get caught up in the emotion, and that he is very level-headed.
  • Reed said you don't see many players cut like freshman Shelton Lewis anymore. Said he is very vocal for a first-year player. Compared his work ethic to former Clemson standout Mackensie Alexander.
  • Emphasized the importance of special teams, noting that the depth on the team should help the Tigers in that regard.
  • Called Aveion Terrell a "worker" with great footwork and a high football IQ.
  • Said redshirt freshman Myles Oliver looks good and is ahead of schedule as he looks to get back from injury. Reed also noted he suffered from the same injury.
  • Reed spent a week over the summer with seven other defensive back coaches. He said he is always trying to soak up knowledge.
  • Reed talked about his experience of being Mr. Irrelevant in the 1995 NFL Draft. Said there was a range of emotion ranging from being mad to excitement. Said he did not know what Mr. Irrelevant was at the time, but that honor comes with a signing bonus more than what a fifth round draft pick was getting at the time. Being a member of that 1995 Panthers' team, Reed played all of his home games at Death Valley.
