Phil Steele Tabs Clemson as Surprise Contender for College Football Playoff (Football)

Longtime college football analyst Phil Steele has spotlighted Clemson as a potential dark horse in the race for the College Football Playoff, despite the Tigers being ranked outside of the AP top 10 in the preseason. Steele ranks Clemson second, behind Utah, in his list of surprise teams for the upcoming season.

In Steele’s annual preseason magazine, Clemson is listed at No. 12 in his top 40 rankings. Additionally, Steele has named two Clemson players to his preseason All-American teams. Linebacker Barrett Carter has earned a spot on the second team, while offensive tackle Blake Miller has been placed on the fourth team.

Steele’s top 10 surprise teams for 2024 include:

  1. Utah
  2. Clemson
  3. Florida State
  4. Oklahoma State
  5. Miami
  6. Kansas State
  7. Iowa
  8. LSU
  9. Virginia Tech
  10. SMU

Clemson will kick off its 2024 season against Georgia at Atlanta’s Mercedes-Benz Stadium on Saturday, Aug. 31. The game is set for a 12 p.m. ET kickoff and will be broadcast on ABC.
