CLEMSON, S.C. — The media got an opportunity to watch the first five periods of spring practice, as the Clemson Football team took to the field Wednesday for the ninth time this spring.
The biggest news of the afternoon was right offensive guard Mitchell Mayes, who was wearing a yellow jersey and had a brace protecting his left knee. There was no official word on the extent of Mayes’ injury, but he was dressed in full pads and spent the practice working with the trainers.
Mayes joins fellow lineman Marcus Tate, Walker Parks and John Williams on the sideline. Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney announced prior to spring practices beginning that Tate, Parks and Williams would not participate.
Freshman Harris Sewell was working at right guard in the place of Mayes. Bryan Tucker was the second-team right guard during the good-on-good tempo drill.
As for the rest of the offensive line, Blake Miller was at first-team left tackle, Trent Howard at left guard, Will Putnam at center, Sewell and Tristen Leigh at right tackle. The second team was Collin Sadler at left tackle, Dietrick Pennington at left guard, Ryan Linthicum at center, Tucker at right guard and Ian Reed at right tackle.
--Speaking of good-on-good drills, wide receiver Cole Turner went up and caught a deep pass in a 50-50 throw from quarterback Cade Klubnik.
--Besides Turner and Williams, Brannon Spector was with the first unit at wide receiver, while Jake Briningstool was the first-team tight end. Sage Ennis was second-team tight end, while Josh Sapp was third team.
--Hunter Helms was still working with the second-team offense, while freshman Christopher Vizzina was working with the third team.
--Wide receiver Antonio Williams also caught a deep pass, but he got away with a push off on Clemson safety Andrew Mukuba.
--Defensive end Justin Mascoll was wearing a green jersey. He had a wrap on his right leg. Swinney announced prior to spring break on March 15 that Mascoll was injured in a previous practice.
--In field goal kicking, Robert Gunn was perfect on all of his kicks, while Aidan Swanson appeared to be the most consistent punter.
--Defensive end Xavier Thomas, corner Sheridan Jones, guard Marcus Tate and wide receiver Troy Stellato were all working out in yellow jerseys and shorts on the adjacent practice fields. Yellow jersey means they are not allowed to practice.
--Wide receiver Adam Randall was wearing a green jersey and was participating in individual drills.
--Former Georgia Tech head coach Geoff Collins was observing Clemson’s practice on Wednesday.
