Swinney, Players want Death Valley Packed (Football)

This time no one can use Easter Weekend or the Master’s for missing Clemson’s Annual Orange and White Spring Game.

Why?

Because Clemson Football intentionally scheduled its Spring Game the weekend after Easter. Traditionally, Clemson has held its spring football game on the second Saturday in April. And though Clemson has packed more than 60,000 fans into Memorial Stadium in the past, Swinney is hoping Tiger fans can pack the place out this coming Saturday.

“I would love to see us fill this thing up,” he said. “It is a big day. We moved it. Obviously, it could have been this weekend, but we moved it for Easter. We need a great crowd here. We need some energy and excitement.

“We are going to have a ton of recruits come in. So, hopefully, Tiger Nation will show up. It is free, so let’s go have a great day in the Valley.”

Swinney is not the only Clemson coach or player requesting fans to pack Death Valley on Saturday. Assistant Coaches Nick Eason and C.J. Spiller have gone to Twitter to make sure fans have seen their pleads, while players such as Cole Turner, Peter Woods, Vic Burley and TJ Dudley have also tweeted messages to the fans.

To add to the weekend, Clemson Baseball will retire Jack Leggett’s No. 7 jersey prior to Saturday’s game against Notre Dame. Leggett coached at Clemson from 1993-2015, leading the Tigers to six College World Series Appearances and two ACC Tournament Championships.

“What a cool today to come and spend here in Clemson. So, hopefully, we will see everyone in the Valley on the 15th,” Swinney said.

Swinney also pointed out the spring game just isn’t about recruiting and impressing prospects with a large crowd, it is also the only opportunity freshmen like Peter Woods and Vic Burley will have an opportunity to play in front of a large crowd prior to the season opener on Labor Day Night.

“We don’t get preseason games, right? We don’t get a (real) game in the spring,” Swinney said. “It’s not like the NFL where you get to go play three preseason games. It is great when we have a few people out there, but the spring game is different. It is like a game.

“When we show up, it creates another level of preparation. It is an opportunity to get some preparation that you don’t get in a normal scrimmage or a normal practice. It is such a good opportunity to grow your team and give some of these guys their first opportunity to feel what it is like to play at this level.”
