Brannon Spector and Barrett Carter met with the media on Tuesday to preview Clemson's upcoming matchup with Notre Dame.
What We Heard
Brannon Spector
- On ignoring the outside noise: "Just practice what you preach. You gotta be inside out. For me personally, it is about staying off social media."
- On the locker room morale: "We are all disappointed but we all know we have the capability. When you turn the ball over and lose the margin it is tough to win."
- Emergence of Tyler Brown and Troy Stellato: "It has been great to see. Just proud of Troy for all the adversity he has battled."
- On WR injuries: "It is a tough position. It is taxing on the body. But yeah, it is a next n man up mentality."
- "This is the biggest game because it is the next game."
- On last year's loss to Notre Dame: "We didn't really didn't have the mindset. We came in off an off weekend and I don't think we had the right mindset."
- On Cade Klubnik: "I feel like Cade has been climbing week by week but it hasn't really showed. I feel like he has so much that people have not really seen. He has a lot of talent and I believe in that kid. He will continue to keep Clemson on the standard that it has been on."
Barrett Carter
- On last year's loss to Notre Dame: "It defnitely is a sticking point. They definitely dominated us. They are a really complete team across the board. We have to bring our A game. You have to bring your big boy pads."
- Expanding on last year's game: "We didn't show up like we should have. We just didn't show up and play physical like we should have."
- On Dabo Swinney having his player's backs: "It is hard for me, I love him and appreciate him doing that. I am a competitor. It is cool to see but you don't want your coach to have to stick up for you and take blame. It is great that he does that but it also lights a fire in me. It is on us to dominate. To line up. I don't want him to ever have to do that again."
- On the down season: "We are taking it as a lesson learned. You carrying stuff with you so don't make the same mistakes. We are all frustrated but once you step on that field you don't care about the record. We can't sit around and feel sorry for yourself. Notre Dame was 5-3 last year and they whipped our tail."
- On being 4-4: "It is super tough. Going back to January we put into so much time. We have dudes across the board so it is really frustrting that our record isn't showing that. But I am also very optimistic that we have the guys that we have. The young guys. Guys are learning. Hopefully carry a lot of momentum into next yeat but I am very optimistic about the future."
- "If we go out and handle business Saturday we can flip the script and change the narrative about Clemson football."
- "I am holding us to the highest standard possible. There is more than we can show as a defense.. That 2.5 yards per rush should be lower."
- On Sam Hartman: "The biggest thing is making him uncomfortable. Those easy throws will lead to big plays. We want to make him scramble and get out of his comfort zone."
- On playing for pride and each other the rest of the season: "We have been doing that from the start. After the fourth loss it opened everyone's eyes but we have doing that from the jump. But in this tough time it has made us come together even more. But that has been the midset all along."
- On what is left to play for: "Each other. I would be doing this university a disserive if I were to check out. That has been the mindset from the leaders."
- On noon kicks: "I prefer noon kickoffs. I know our fans are gonna bring it no matter what time it is."
- "I have seen Tristan (Leigh) grow so much. Now that he has that confidence he is showing that he was a 5-star."
- On if he's ever asked to run the ball at the goal line due to playing QB in high school, Carter says yes, jokingly. But really not. "They're not jokes, I’m being serious. I’ve hinted that to coach Riley and coach Swinney. Hopefully, that time will come."
