The 2024 college football season is fast approaching, and with less than a month until the new season begins, let's take a look at the top running backs around the country heading into the upcoming season.

Honorable Mention: Phil Mafah (Clemson Tigers), Devin Neal (Kansas), Ashton Jeanty (Boise State Broncos), Trevor Etienne (Florida Gators)

5. Donovan Edwards (Michigan Wolverines)

Donovan Edwards' numbers from 2023 do not jump off the board: 497 yards rushing, 4.2 yards per rush, five rushing touchdowns, 30 receptions, 249 receiving yards, and zero receiving touchdowns. However, with Blake Corum leaving for the NFL, Edwards is the Wolverines' lead back with an abundance of potential.

Edwards played last season despite a partially torn patellar tendon. Now that he is healthy, look for the experienced running back to return to his 2022 form, when he rushed for 150 yards or more three times in the last six games of the regular season, totaling nearly 1,000 yards on just 140 carries.

4. Omarion Hampton (North Carolina Tar Heels)

One of the most underrated running backs in the country, Hampton rushed for a staggering 1,504 yards, 5.9 yards per rush, 15 rushing touchdowns, 29 receptions, 222 receiving yards, and one receiving touchdown in 2023.

Hampton had the fifth-most rushing yards in the FBS last season, earning him a spot as a Doak Walker Award finalist and Walter Camp first-team All-America honors. He also had seven games with over 100 yards rushing.

3. Quinshon Judkins (Ohio State Buckeyes)

Judkins transferred to Ohio State over the offseason after a dominant season with Ole Miss, where he had 1,158 yards rushing, 4.3 yards per rush, 15 rushing touchdowns, 22 receptions, 149 receiving yards, and two receiving touchdowns in 2023.

It will be interesting to see how Judkins adjusts to a system where he will split time with another great running back, TreVeyon Henderson. At Ole Miss, he was the lead back with 545 carries in just two seasons. This year, he will have to get used to sharing carries with his teammate.

2. TreVeyon Henderson (Ohio State Buckeyes)

Henderson is not only one of the biggest threats in the country when running the ball, but he is also very dangerous in the passing game. In 2023, he had 926 yards rushing, 5.9 yards per rush, 11 rushing touchdowns, 19 receptions, 229 receiving yards, and 10 receiving touchdowns.

Henderson has terrific speed, acceleration, and the ability to make defenders miss. The 5-foot-10, 212-pound speedster had the fifth-highest grade among Power 5 running backs last season, according to Pro Football Focus.

1. Ollie Gordon II (Oklahoma State Cowboys)

Gordon II had an electrifying 2023 season with 1,732 yards rushing, 6.1 yards per rush, 21 rushing touchdowns, 39 receptions, 330 receiving yards, and one receiving touchdown.

Many believe this will be the year a running back wins the Heisman Trophy, thanks to Ollie Gordon's explosive and game-changing ability. Over nine games last season, Gordon rushed for over 100 yards in eight of those nine games. During that streak, he had over 530 yards rushing combined in just two games.
