One game on Clemson's schedule that should worry Tigers fans is when Clemson travels to Blacksburg, Virginia, on Nov. 9 to play the Virginia Tech Hokies. Here's why:
At first glance, it is easy to overlook the Hokies. They are coming off a 7-6 season in 2023 and have not been a true threat in the conference since winning it in 2010. However, they are a legitimate threat this season to every team in the ACC.
The Hokies won five of their last seven games in 2023, with their only two losses during that stretch coming against ranked teams. They lost to the Louisville Cardinals, who went on to win ten games, and to the NC State Wolfpack, who had a solid season.
In their other games, they beat Wake Forest, Syracuse, Boston College, Virginia, and Tulane in the Military Bowl.
They won those games by scoring a lot of points, highlighted by 48 against Boston College, 55 against Virginia, and 41 against Tulane.
Down the stretch last season, they dominated their opponents on the offensive side of the ball. This type of offensive domination could mean trouble for Clemson. The Tigers will need a strong showing from their defense, which was ranked 8th in the country in yards allowed per game in 2023.
With Clemson's offense struggling at times in 2023, fans should hope for a low-scoring game against the Hokies on Nov. 9. A high-scoring game will likely lead to a win for Virginia Tech.
What makes this game even more challenging for the Tigers is that Clemson will be playing in one of the loudest and most difficult stadiums to play in.
Lane Stadium will be rocking on Nov. 9 when the Hokies run out to "Enter Sandman" by Metallica, which is widely considered one of the most famous entrances in all of college sports.
The Tigers will have to overcome any pregame jitters right away. If they do not, the crowd will only get louder as the Hokies offense is powerful enough for an early start to get the crowd going.
Due to their high-powered offense, Virginia Tech will be a tough opponent for any team this season. At home, they will be even more of a threat. They are a team looking to put their name back on the map, and a notable upset against the Tigers will be one of the top priorities on their schedule. Clemson cannot overlook this game if they want to contend for the ACC Championship and a spot in the College Football Playoff.
