Tiger Tracker: WR Target Sets Commitment Date, Latest On Search for QB (Recruiting)

Alex Taylor has long been a priority target for Clemson. He was the very first wide receiver in the 2024 class to pick up an offer from the Tigers last June and on Tuesday, the 4-star prospect announced a commitment date.

The 6-foot-3, 175-pound wideout out of Grimsley (Greensboro, NC), told All Clemson Tigers he will announce on July 29 in a ceremony he plans on having at his high school stadium.

However, before that announcement, Taylor is set to take one more round of visits. He will take an official to Clemson that first weekend in June and follow that up with trips to Virginia Tech, North Carolina and NC State.

Taylor last visited during spring practice, getting his first up close look at Garret Riley's offense.

“The family atmosphere there, it’s just crazy," Taylor said. "Every time I come in, I feel loved. Everyone knows who I am, stuff like that. And their offense, with coach Riley coming in, he’s going to be super explosive. A lot of deep shots with the receivers so I really love how the new offense is looking.”

With just a little over two weeks left before the big official visit weekend, Clemson is still searching for its next quarterback target. Rarely has Clemson needed to go so far down the board to land a quarterback, yet here we are.

5-star Jadyn Davis and 4-star DJ Lagway picked up the first two offers last summer. After Lagway announced a commitment to Florida, the board expanded and Walker White picked up an offer. However, he would end up committing to Auburn and Davis announced for Michigan. The board expanded again, with Air Noland nabbing an offer.

Noland committed to Ohio State in early April, and the staff has yet to offer another quarterback. Riley visited and watched 3-star Ethan Grunkemeyer (Olentangy, Lewis Center, Oh) throw two weeks ago, and a future visit is in the works. That visit would have to take place before any offer went out.

Time does not appear to be on the Tigers' side here, though, as Grunkemeyer plans to have a decision made by the end of the month. He visited Penn State last weekend and there was some talk that the Nittany Lions would be pushing for a commitment while he was on campus. That did not happen. However, he will be back in Happy Valley this weekend for the Elite 11.

Will he get to Clemson before announcing a commitment? That remains to be seen, although Grunkemeyer did tell All Clemson Tigers that was the plan.

Well, what happens if he doesn't? That is the million dollar question at this point. 3-star Kamari McClellan (Clay, Pinson, Al) is set to compete at Dabo Swinney's high school camp. He is a name at least worth monitoring. While McClellan has participated in the camp each of the past two years, those were under the watch of former QB coach Brandon Streeter. This will be Riley's first time watching him throw.
