Caden Grice pitched a career high eight innings and drove in two runs as Clemson knocked off Boston College 6-3 at Harrington Athletics Village Saturday to clinch the weekend series. It was the Tigers' fourth consecutive ACC series win.
Grice was masterful, tying a career-high with nine strikeouts, as he held the Eagles to just two runs on two hits and Billy Amick continued to stay hot, going 3-for-4 with two RBI. The sophomore is now hitting .406 on the season.
With the win, Clemson moves to 28-17 overall and 11-10 in ACC play. Boston College drops to 29-14 overall and 13-11 in conference play. It marked the 15th year in a row Clemson won the three-game series over Boston College.
The Tigers struck first, getting a two-out RBI hit from Billy Amick in the top of the first inning to take a 1-0 lead.
In the top of the second, Clemson would add three more runs, all coming with two outs. Grice drove in two on a single back up the middle and Amick would drive in his second run of the game with a double down the left-field line, giving the Tigers a 4-0 lead. Cooper Ingle also extended his hitting streak to 16 games in the inning.
Boston College would get a run back in the bottom of the second without the benefit of a hit. Grice walked Patrick Roche to start the inning. Roche then stole second and advanced to third on a fly ball out to center. A throwing error would then allow him to score and cut the lead to 4-1.
The Eagles would finally get their first base hits of the game in the bottom of the sixth. Travis Honeyman hit a one-out triple off the wall in left center and then would come home on an RBI single by Joe Vetrano, making it 4-2 Clemson.
The Tigers would add some insurance in the seventh, loading the bases with just one out. Will Taylor scored on a wild pitch and a Blake Wright sacrifice fly plated Amick to push the lead to 6-2.
Boston College would add a run in the ninth for the final margin.
Player of the Game: This was no doubt Grice's day. No only did he turn in his best start of the season on the mound, he was 1-for-4 at the plate, while driving in two key runs in the second.
Key Moment: After Grice hit a batter with one out in the eighth, he fell behind the next hitter, as Boston College looked to snag some late momentum. However, Grice then got a line drive that was hit directly to Bertram at second for an easy double play to end the inning.
Stat of the Game: Clemson hit .400 with runners in scoring position, going 4-for-10 on the day.
Up Next: No midweek game this week as the Tigers aren't in action again until next weekend when they return home for a crucial three-game series against Louisville. Game one is set for Friday, with first pitch at 6 p.m.
