Clemson’s 24-14 win over Virginia Tech on Saturday demonstrated the Tigers’ resilience, marking their ninth victory at Lane Stadium and making them one of only two teams to achieve that milestone in Blacksburg, along with Miami.
Clemson safety RJ Mickens shined in the win, posting five tackles, two pass deflections, and a crucial interception. Speaking to reporters afterward, Mickens described the play: “We were in robber coverage, and I saw the quarterback look to the boundary. I know whenever he looks there, his progression should go back into the middle of the field.” That quick read allowed Mickens to snag the interception, showcasing not only his athleticism but also his deep understanding of the game. His focus and attention to detail continue to set him apart as one of the ACC’s top safeties.
Looking ahead, Mickens and the Clemson defense are preparing for their next matchup against Pittsburgh, where they’ll face running back Desmond Reid, a significant offensive threat. “Their back #0, he’s really good, really explosive — a home-run hitter. They also have some receivers who could take the top off the defense,” Mickens said, acknowledging Pittsburgh’s playmaking potential. The defensive unit is focused on tightening its schemes during this week’s practices to counter the Panthers’ explosive attack.
While Clemson delivered what could be considered their best defensive performance of the season, Mickens emphasized there’s still room for improvement. “We need to cage the quarterback better, really fly to the ball, gang tackle, and stick to guys in coverage,” he said. Mickens also praised freshmen Sammy Brown and Ashton Hampton for their consistent impact, predicting they’ll be major contributors moving forward.
With Clemson aiming to finish 7-1 in conference play, Mickens noted the significance of that goal. “That would be huge. That’s all we can do at this point... having the best finish possible and letting the chips fall after that.” Though Clemson may not be getting the national spotlight it hoped for, the Tigers’ determination remains evident.
