Antonio Williams wants to be Cade Klubnik's go-to guy in Clemson's new offense.
After leading the team in catches (56) and yards (604) and being named a freshman All-American by PFF last season, Williams is looking to take a big step forward in Garrett Riley's offense in 2023, including becoming a security blanket for his quarterback.
"Just being the alpha dog, that go-to guy in those tough situations where we need a first down, touchdown, big play. I'll make that play," Williams said. "And then turning short routes and screens into big plays."
Clemson's offense ranked No. 66 in passing yards in 2022 and Williams feels like the group underachieved a season ago, particularly the wideouts. With Riley's unique version of the Air Raid offense being implemented, Williams feels like this is a fresh start for the Tigers, and he insists the receivers already have a chip on their shoulder.
"I feel like I underachieved and as group we underachieved," Williams said. "We have high expectations here and we definitely didn't meet those last year. But it's a new year and we got something to prove."
The new offense is focusing on simplicity and halfway through spring practice, Williams said the results speak for themselves.
"I think it's easier than our last offense," Williams said. "Like first day of practice we were already going fast. I don't think I've had any MAs (missed assignments) yet, so yeah it's definitely easy to learn."
